Rhododendrons

Large Hybrids

Mostly 9 cm square pots

Can be planted in a two or three litre pot. Keep under cover to prevent water-logging if potted in autumn. Otherwise grow better outside in a shade tunnel or windbreak area. Move to 5 or 7.5 litre after one season, for sale after two seasons.

PINK FLOWERS

Betty Wormald (George Hardy x red hybrid). Very large pink flowers of tyrian-rose, fading towards the centre with brownish-crimson speckling. Trusses of 10 to 12. Excellent commercial plant. 1.80m - M.

Bruce Brechtbill (Sport of Unique). Attractive pale pink flowers with yellow throat. Better colour than Unique. Shiny rounded foliage, neat compact habit. 1.20 m - E/M.

Cynthia (Catawbiense hybrid). Deep rose-pink flowers with deeper crimson staining on the upper lobe. Huge trusses of up to 24 flowers. A well-known reliable commercial standard. 1.80 m - M.

Ebony Pearl Large soft pink flowers. Rich dark red foliage, very striking and unusual. New in this country and unlike any other rhododendron.

Grand Slam * (Trudy Webster x Lydia). Brilliant pink flowers in enormous trusses up to 30 cm high. Good pruning will keep this plant in shape and vigorous. 1.80 m - M/L.

Kalmia Latifolia

Kalmias are very prone to fertiliser scorch but will also die if no fertiliser given! Suggest a balanced liquid feed at every watering, rate equivalent to 50ppm nitrogen. If controlled release fertilisers must be used, then no more than 1Kg per cubic metre of compost. Good drainage essential: we use 50/50 peat and bark.

These plants are a challenge to grow and take several years to reach flowering size.
