Garden shrubs to plant now

This is the best time of year to plant rhododendrons and azaleas.

No watering will be needed during the winter, and by next spring the roots should have developed to reduce watering need next year.

We are busy at the moment potting up plants ready for next season, and are very excited to see flower buds already forming on the rhododendrons and azaleas.

Woodland Barn Nurseries at Evenley Wood Plant Fair

Sunday 3rd of April was not to be missed at Evenley Hall.  Woodland Barn Nurseries attended the plant fair there on a surprisingly warm and pleasant day.  The surroundings were stunning, with 60 acres of woodland populated with stunning magnolias and rhododendrons.  There were mown grassy walks suitable for pushchairs and many families with children were able to enjoy the day.

On show we had a lovely collection of hellebores, including White spotted Lady, Pink spotted Lady and many varieties from Helen Ballard's crosses.  We sowed the seed for all of these plants almost 3 years ago, but it has been well worth the wait to see their enchanting flowers.

Next Sunday the 10th April don't miss us at Bramhall Hall Gardens, details on our Plant Fairs page.

Welcome to our first newsletter

winterIn our nursery the temperature remained between -8 and -12 degrees most days for a whole six weeks. There were just a few days of milder weather in between. The lowest temperature we recorded one morning was -16 degrees!

Winter PlantsAlthough we lost many of the more tender plants, the rhododendrons and azaleas came smiling through the snow.

After we have rooted our cuttings, the plants grow in unheated well-ventilated polytunnels or outdoors in an area surrounded by windbreaks (see pictures). If they survive our conditions they will certainly be hardy enough for the vast majority of gardens.

We hope that you are looking forward to the coming season as much as we are, and that you haven’t lost too many plants in the extreme weather.
